Branchlines December Updates
BRANCHLINES AND OLD SCHOOL WOOD
UPDATE. We were sad to learn of the death of David Hilditch, one of our regular volunteers. He was always enthusiastic and loved taking part in the hedge laying that we have done recently. There is a collection in his memory at the White Horse, some of this may be used to plant a “Scottish” tree at the wood.
Design for the new entrance signs is almost complete.
A mulberry bush, donated by Ingrid Morelli, has been planted near the pond at the edge of the orchard.
WORKING PARTY. There will be no Saturday session in December. Regular mid-week volunteers may still meet.
AGM ADVANCE NOTICE: Friday 30th January 2026. Held in the Village Hall from 7pm, admission free, all welcome. Guest speaker to be confirmed. Look out for the usual posters nearer the time. 2026 will be the 25th anniversary year of the formation of Branchlines. Our voluntary group first met in January 2001 with the plan to acquire land and plant a community woodland for the village; suitable land eventually became available in 2008 and planting commenced…
COPPICING: Saturday 31st January 2026. Meet 09.30 by the benches on the main track at the wood. We will be cutting hazel in the traditional coppice method, producing stakes and binders for hedge laying. Come dressed for the weather and bring a hot drink for a refreshment break at 11.00, cake is usually shared. Tools and training provided, although it will be useful to bring your own secateurs or lopper.
HEDGE LAYING COURSE. Another course in this traditional country craft is being arranged for early 2026, probably February but date to be confirmed. This could be open to adults who have not volunteered with us before but there would be a small charge. Get in touch if you might be interested.
ST LAWRENCE CHURCHYARD
WORKING PARTY. Saturday December 13th and January 10th, 9.30 – 12.30. Meet in the churchyard. Routine management continues. More volunteers would be much appreciated, no special skills needed, it’s like gardening 2 acres. Come and get involved. Please bring garden gloves and a hot drink for a refreshment break at 11.
For 2026. We will be restoring the lawn of the lower graveyard for better access and safety. Various unauthorised obstructions will have to be removed and soil levelling carried out (except on recent graves). Various dead and awkward branches to be removed.
